Supreme Court Dismisses NDC’s Case Against the EC – Voter Registration to Go On As Scheduled

The Supreme Court has dismissed the case brought before it by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) against the ongoing voter registration exercise.

According to the nation’s top court, the Electoral Commission’s right to conduct voter registration exercise under the law cannot be infringed upon.

The court, in its decision, dismissed all but two reliefs sought by the plaintiffs.

The decision means the NDC’s request for the existing voter ID cards and birth certificates to be accepted as forms of identification for compiling the new register has been thrown out.

After the verdict was delivered, both the NDC and the NPP were declaring victory in the case with the NDC claiming the old voter ID would now be accepted for the exercise.

Subsequent reporting however has debunked that – and it seems going forward only the passport and the Ghana card would be the accepted proof of Ghanaian citizenship by the EC.
