Accra Tremor Registered At 4.2 On the Richter Scale, It Was An Earthquake – Senior Ghanaian Seismologist Reveals

A senior Ghanaian Seismologist, Nicholas Opoku, has come out to educate the public about the earth tremors felt in the capital and it’s surrounding environs on the night of Wednesday, June 24th 2020.

Opoku, a senior seismologist with the Ghana Geological Survey Authority, said the tremor registered at 4.2 on the Ritcher scale and was a proper earthquake.

Parts of Accra and its surrounding environs felt a seismic disturbance in the late hours of Wednesday, with many residents flooding social media to state their experience.

Speaking on Citi Fm this morning, Mr Opoku said albeit a small one, the tremors felt last night was an earthquake.

“The foreshock last night was about 3.7 on the Richter Scale, the main shock registered at about 4.2 and the aftershock was about 3.5 all on the scale,” Opoku told Citi Fm.

“What we felt last night was a small earthquake but it was still significant,” he added.
