U.S Couple Travelled to Ghana to Give Birth But Are Now Stuck Here Due to COVID

A U.S couple who travelled to Ghana to give birth are now stuck in the country due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Stephen and Zara Wilcox travelled to Ghana back in March for the birth of their daughter Vernice, who was born via surrogacy. A relative of Zara in Ghana carried the baby to term and delivered her.

However, the pandemic struck whilst here and since then the couple have been unable to return home with their newborn.

Speaking with CBS news, the couple said they have contacted the U.S embassy in Accra to arrange travel back home but they are being met with obstacles.

They’ve been told that before they can obtain a passport for Vernice, they have to prove she’s their biological daughter. The only way to do that is via a DNA test conducted by the embassy – but they claim they can’t conduct it right now due to the pandemic.

“You have to do a DNA test, that’s what they told us. We said, ‘OK, fine how do we do that?’ ‘Oh, well you can’t do a DNA test we’re not doing it. It has to be done through us,’” Stephen said.

The couple have been waiting over 13 weeks now for the embassy to help them but they’ve received no help.

“They haven’t even returned our email so here we are totally stranded,” Stephen added.

CBSN Philly held an interview with the couple to talk about their ordeal.
