Many were quick to nail Ghanaian musician Becca to the cross when she tweeted about the hypocrisy of many Ghanaians.
According to the singer, why are people moving high and low to remove the speck from their brother’s eye while refusing to deal with the beam lodged in their own eyes. Becca tweeted “You are here in Africa fighting…racism (but) you are judging someone for marrying a fellow not from your country…Damn Hypocrites!!!” with the tweet greeted with contempt.
Celebrities such as Ama K Abeberese shamed her for her views with some people insulting her online including degrading comments about her skin tone.
Listening to the Wahaala Boys Podcast, one can understand where Becca is coming from. Take for instance the fight within our own society based on the skin colour of a person. Many are quick to point out that Becca has bleached her skin but how many have taken the time to ask, “why did she bleach?” Many are aware of the struggles of being dark in Ghana especially if one is female. The derogatory language that at times is used to describe you not forgetting how light skin girls are worshipped both private and in the media.
Back to the matter at hand, it is easy to dismiss tribalism and discrimination based on religion or country, but their effects cannot be easily dismissed. Many may not remember Kofi Boafo, a man who took his own life due to his family’s refusal to allow him to marry the person he wanted. He posted his suicide note on Facebook a couple of days before taking his own life.
How many people have lost out on being happy due to tribal sentiments of others? Nobody is denying the importance of the Black Lives Matter movement, but many are dismissing the damages caused by the discriminatory acts they engage in therefore Becca is right to point out the hypocrisy.
