The popular Ghanaian rice and beans dish, Waakye or Awaakye as some call it, is receiving massive attention on micro-blogging network Twitter, after some unusual photos of the famous dish packaged in a glass jar broke the internet yesterday.
Yesterday, the internet went crazy after the above photo surfaced across all social media networks. Perhaps, meant to be an innovative way of packaging a traditional meal, the response from social media users turned out to be not-so-favourable however, with many expressing their reservations about this particular kind of packaging.
Waakye is a Ghanaian dish of cooked rice and beans, commonly eaten for breakfast or lunch. The rice and beans, usually black-eyed peas or cow beans, are cooked together, along with red dried sorghum leaf sheaths or stalks and limestone.

The word waakye is from the Hausa language and means beans. It is the contracted form of the full name “shinkafa da wake” which means rice and beans.
Traditionally served in leaves, the food eventually began to be served in takeaway bowls and rubbers after the popular leaves faded out of the system.
Today, Twitter has reacted tremendously to the unusual jar packaging, with the hashtag #waakyelivesmatter, trending at Number one as at the time of filing this report.
