Is Patapaa the Vanilla Ice of Ghana Music?

Published by

The artist formerly known as Patapaa but goes with the name Patapeezy has suffered in the music industry with many trivialising his music talents and accomplishments.

Many people were quick to call Patapeezy a one hit wonder when his song “One Corner” became a monstrous hit. The dance challenge which accompanied the song gave the song a longevity that has not been seen in the country before and after. Celebrities were caught taking part in the dance challenge from Kwaku Manu to Yaw Dabo and not a single party could escape the dance craze.

Like Vanilla Ice’s “Ice Ice Baby” track, “One Corner” escaped the shores of Ghana and migrated to the whole of Africa. Anywhere one could find Africans, the song reigned supreme.

This is not the first time a song from Ghana has transcended the shores of Ghana, but the scale of this song was mind blowing. “Alkayida” by Guru was a hit only in Ghana while the Azonto movement was international but none on the songs apart from Azonto and Antenna by Fuse ODG was international.

Many thought Patapeezy’s music career will die with the natural death of the song like what happened with the rap career of Vanilla Ice but like a true artiste, Patapeezy showed that he belonged in the music industry. Even though the likes of Kuami Eugene has claimed his song is pure noise, he has still managed to work with some of the biggest acts in Afrobeats. Mr Eazi featured him on one of his biggest tracks with Article Wan also benefitting from the skills of Patapeezy.

Patapaa is one of the few artists that can boast of being part of at least three of the biggest tracks to ever emerge out of Ghana in the past two decades. That is “One Corner”, “Akwaaba” with Mr Eazi and “Daavi Ne Ba” popular known as “Skopatumana” with Kawoula Biov. Two of them were international while one was more popular than any of the songs ever released by Sarkodie and Shatta Wale, two of the biggest acts in Ghana in the last three years.

Patapeezy deserves credit for lasting longer than many predicted while enjoying new successes. He is entertaining with his performance at Ghana meet Naija being probably the best performance of the night. Whether one appreciates his songs or not, one can not ignore him and that is the true nature of an artiste.
