In the days of Highlife, romantic songs were the order of the day with the likes of Amakye Dede, Daddy Lumba, Ofori Amponsah, Kwabena Kwabena and the late Kofi B churning out music that makes one desire to be with someone.
The early days of Hiplife also had romantic bangers with the likes of Reggie Rockstone releasing “Plan Ben”, Lord Kenya’s “Me Do”, Akyeame’s “Ma San Aba” and the Executioner aka Obrafour dropping the hit song “Odo”.
Today one will struggle to find great love songs from Ghana although the likes of Kidi, King Promise and Kuami Eugene are trying their best to ensure lovers of romantic songs get quality songs to enjoy although Kuami Eugene is accused of stealing songs.
When one look at Ghana’s mortal frenemy Alata Yaw aka Nigeria, one must admit that the current music coming out of the country is at best second to the ones coming out of Nigeria and at worse not fit to be played at the same event. When one listen to the likes of Davido’s “If”, Tekno’s “Pana” and Runtown’s “Mad Over You”, one starts to wonder where the writers of Ghana are? If Ghana’s best is King Promise, Kidi and Kuami Eugene then that is not competition to the Nigerians. They should be competeing with the likes of Teni, Joeboy and Crayon.
One remembers the days when Ghanaians were matching Nigerians boot for boot in the music industry. The pressure was so high that the biggest artistes in Nigeria at the time P Square had to steal Azonto and rename it Allingo. The likes of Wande Coal and Wizkid were all appreciative of the acts in Ghana with the arguably the best rapper in Nigeria M.I. admitting that when he first met Sarkodie, he was shook. He knew he had to step up his game.
Some of us living abroad yearn for the days of Ruff N Smooth, VIP, R2Bees, Castro, Ebony even Atumpan with his “small girl” track. With the controversies of Ghanaian musicians stealing music from other artists like in the case of Mr Drew and Kuami Eugene, one’s hopes are simply fading but who knows tomorrow.
