One can easily forget the predecessors and legends who carved the way for their success when they reach the top and that is exactly what the music industry and a lot of music fans are doing to most artistes.
In a recent conversation about the state of music in Ghana especially the constant noise about Nigerian music dominating the airwaves leading to the demise of Ghanaian music, R2Bees were mentioned as the perfect example of how to handle that situation. This made me realise how one of the best music groups in the country has been maligned in recent times when it comes to best musicians.
I have had several debates about music, and many don’t put R2Bees in their top 5 Hiplife groups of all time, something I find absurd. Many will have the likes of VIP now VVIP, 4X4, Akyeame, Akatakyie, Praye, Wutah, Nananom, Sass Squad, Buk Bak and Ruff n Smooth. Although these artistes impacted the genre, not many can count the accomplishments of R2Bees as part of their careers. At best, only three of the names mentioned can stand toe to toe with R2Bees in terms of music pedigree while the rest not even fit to be mentioned in the same sphere as them.
When veteran musician and Hiplife legend Tic Tac showed the way by featuring Tony Tetuila on his track “Fefe ne fe”, R2Bees took it a step further by releasing some of the hottest tracks with Nigerian artistes. How many people can stand still and not enjoy “Kiss Your Hand”, a track featuring Wande Coal or how many didn’t or wont jam to “Slow Down” featuring Wizkid?
Maybe if Ghanaian artistes produce great music especially when they feature Nigerian acts like what R2Bees have done and continue to do, then Ghanaian songs will rise in Nigeria. I have never been to Nigeria, but I can’t remember a Nigerian party that didn’t play R2Bees or Tic Tac featuring Tony Tetuila.
Mugeez and Paedae are two very talented musicians and together makes some fire music represented by their many awards and nominations but it seems that the fans are starting to forget. Maybe it is my circle that don’t appreciate and are sleeping on the greatness that is R2Bees.
