Stonebwoy Burniton, real name Livingstone Etse Satekla was born on March 5, 1988, in Ashaiman, a suburb of Accra, and is 4th in a family of seven (7) siblings. He discovered his talent and love for music as far back as primary four.
Young Stonebwoy realized his love and passion for creative arts, after having successfully scripted and acted for the drama club of his school and also put words together in a rhythmic manner. Since then he never abandoned his quest to venture into the creative arts.
While in Secondary School, Stonebwoy was privileged to meet up with radio DJ/Presenter, Doctor Duncan who at the time was the host of KASAHARE LEVELS, a real-time rap battle programme. Out of that programme came the likes of Sarkodie, Dr Cryme and many other relevant rappers in Ghana. Stonebwoy recalls “I battled my way out every weekend without defeat till date. Music chose me, I didn’t choose music”.
His first radio hit, Makoma (My Heart) was released in the second year at Senior High School plus several others that followed up later. By the third year, he had amassed for himself flaming underground popularity and went on to release another hit titled Empress which held him up years after leaving High School in 2007.
Under “Samini Music”, Stonebwoy recorded his first hit single “Climax” featuring Samini and subsequently “Ghetto Love” featuring Irene Logan. Both songs earned him nominations at the Ghana Music Awards. After this exposure, he released his debut album “Grade 1 Album”. The album contains seventeen tracks which featured prominent Ghanaian artists including Tinny and Edem aside from those mentioned above. The release of the debut album made the Stonebwoy brand a household name in the music industry.
He has since followed up with the albums; Necessary Evil, Epistles of Mama and Anloga Junction. The Epistles of Mama album which was dedicated to his late mum peaked at Number thirteen (13) on Billboard chart top 200 albums worldwide. In 2018 ‘Epistles Of Mama (EOM)’ was rated the second-best album in the world according to reggaeville.
His latest album Anloga junction featured the likes of Keri Hilson (US), Nasty C (SA), Diamond Platinumz, Alicia Harley (Jamaica), Jahmiel (Jamaica), Zlatan (Nigeria), Kojo Antwi (Ghana), Chivv (Netherlands) and Spanker (Netherlands). He also worked with producers like Mix Master Garzy, Streetbeatz, M.O.G. Beatz, Spanker, Riga, Phantom, Ipaapi and others.
Stonebwoy has performed in Germany, Italy, Spain and Austria. His 2016 Canada-America tour saw him perform in New York City, Ohio, Philadelphia and Ontario. In the same year, he rocked Perth, Melbourne, Brisbane and Sidney all in Australia. His second Euro tour saw him travel to the Nordic to thrill fans in Denmark, Finland and Sweden in last quarter of 2017. Stonebwoy performed at Reggae Sumfest, Afro nation festival in Portugal, Rotterdam reggae festival, Uppsala Reggae Festival, Rototom Sunsplash.
He won the Best International Act: Africa category at the 2015 BET Awards and Artist of the Year at the 2015 Ghana Music Awards. He is also a recipient of two billboard plaques.
He is recognized as the king of reggae and dance hall artists in Africa. Stonebwoy is also an actor, having appeared in the movie My name is Ramadan. He is a global ambassador for sanitation.
In September 2019, he was made the brand ambassador for Voltic Natural Mineral Water, in a deal that could be renewed after two years. He is also a brand ambassador for Big Boss Energy drink. Stonebwoy is Married to Dr Louisa Ansong, with two children.
