The power of social media in this day and age is one that can never be underestimated.
A lot of times people feel freer on social media than they do in real life and are able to say and do things they would never do or say in person.
But social media is not anonymous and whatever you say or do remains as a record which can come back to bite you in the bum at any time.
A Ghanaian lady, Afua Anku, who used to work for Nissan in Canada has just learnt this lesson the hard way.
Afua has been fired from her cushy job with the automobile company after social media dug up some of her old tweets which were racist and anti-semitic.
Afua had apparently been taking shots at some Africans such as Somalis and Jews in many old tweets on her account.
One of the offensive tweets read: “I’m like Hitler and Somalis are like Jews”, whilst another said “Hitler seen things about the Jews that the rest of the world just didn’t see yet, I ain’t been mad at that homie no more”.
Ironically, Afua also posted a tweet warning that people’s employment status could be impacted by their social media posts not realizing she was headed that way herself.
That’s exactly what happened as some folks on social media were not happy with those tweets and a campaign was started to send them into her bosses at Nissan.
Soon after receiving those complaints, Nissan announced on Twitter that Afua had been fired.
