Nigeria’s Electricity distribution companies (DisCos) say the reason Nigerians have to deal with power outages is because they refuse to pay their bills.
In a meeting between the Minister of Power, Sale Mamman, the management of the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, it was revealed that the DisCos say power shortages exist due to people refusing to pay their bills.

Nigerians have been complaining over power outages interrupting their lives, especially in this era when everyone is being asked to stay home due to the coronavirus pandemic.
But the DisCos are saying if you want reliable power, then pay your electricity bills on time.
This was revealed by the Minister of Power during the meeting.
He said power generating companies (GENCOS) are facing a revenue shortfall because DisCos are not paying their bills, and the DisCos also say they can’t pay because consumers are not paying their bills.

“We are aware of the challenges faced by Nigerians, so we have started talking to GENCOs because they have been complaining that Discos are not paying and only about 20% of their dues are remitted.” Sale Mamman said.
“So, the GENCOs are facing technical and revenue shortfall. Consequently, they can’t as well meet their financial obligations to gas companies. The Discos also pay less of their generated revenue to GENCOs, because they complain about power theft by consumers, high technical costs, etc.” he added.
Long story short, the consistent power supply Nigerians are begging for might not arrive anytime soon.
