Initially, China was the country suffering most from the coronavirus outbreak since it originated there, but Italy has now overtaken them as the hardest hit.
The Southern European country has now become the global epicentre of the pandemic, recording more cases and deaths every single day whilst China is reducing its cases and death toll.
Things have become so bad in Bergamo, a city in northern Italy, that the Italian army has been called in to help transport corpses out of the city to other cities for cremation.
Bergam’s only crematorium has been overwhelmed and unable to deal with the death toll.
To ameliorate the situation, the Italian army has been called in to transport dozens of coffins to other cities where they can be properly disposed of.
The extraordinary measure comes after about 93 coronavirus related deaths occurred in a single day in Bergamo.
The local government revealed in a statement: “The crematorium of Bergamo, working at full capacity, 24 hours a day, can cremate 25 dead.
“It is clear that it could not stand up to the numbers of the past few days.”
The coffins have been transported to crematoriums in Modena, Acqui Terme, Domodossola, Parma, Piacenza and several other cities to be disposed of.
