The packaging of a product speaks volume of the product therefore one can be very disappointed when the packaging doesn’t match it.
Afrobeat has grown and is now international but many of the artists look nothing like Africans. If anything, they look more like American rappers.
Afrobeat and Afropop singer Burna Boy is one example. The artist is covered in tattoos and has grills in his mouth. Although dreadlocks at their basic form is not necessarily an American rapper’s uniform but the current rappers in America has turned that into their uniform especially when combined with tattoos. Burna Boy looks more like Future, 2 Chainz and Whiz Khalifa than his idol Fella Kuti.
Davido and Wizkid also look nothing like Nigerians but rather like R&B artists.
The likes of 2Baba and Yemi Alade have always shown how proud they are as Africans and this is evident in the way they carry themselves especially in their dressing. Ghanaian rapper M.anifest is another musician who shows his Pan African side both in his dressing and in his songs.
Even though majority of the current Afrobeat artists look nothing like Africans, the songs they are producing are nothing like the Americans. Songs such as ‘If’ by Davido and Burna Boy’s ‘Ye’ have enjoyed huge successes and have had over 50 millions play on YouTube.
