The Ghana Movie Industry Is Dead But Who Killed It?

Published by

If the late 80s, 90s and even early 2000s was anything to go by, one would have assumed the Ghanaian movie industry will be competing if not dominating the West African movie scene.

Movies like Kanana and Road to Kurantumi showed where the movie industry in Ghana was heading to. The acting, composition and most importantly story line of these movies were something else and one was optimistic that with bigger budgets and better film gears these film makers will make compelling movies.

Fast forward to today and one wonders if they have been transported into the dark ages of African cinema. Movies like Robot Boy, Give and Take, Terminator Genysis and Black Warrior gives one an indication of how low the current standards are when it comes to movies in the country.

The saddest aspect of the situation is that most of these mediocre movies boost some of the so-called A-list actors. Actor Kwadwo Nkansah popularly known as Lilwin is the main character in Black Warrior and other terrible movies. One would think by now he will protect his brand from such poor projects but that is not the case.

The likes of Shirley Frimpong Manso have tried to improve the quality of the movies in the country but the task is too big for one person if not a very small fraction of the people to carry.

Majority of the movies coming out of the country is poor in story line, acting and basically anything that makes a movie good.

Producers refusing to pay actors and actresses, most people with zero training in acting stepping in front of the camera and cinematographers who have zero knowledge about the craft are all contributing factors to the dire state of movies in Ghana.

Is the current state of affairs in the movie industry due to actors/actresses, producers or just the movie fans? Let us know in the comment section.
