The first case of the growing global pandemic of Coronavirus (COVID-19) to hit Sub Saharan Africa has been reported in Lagos Nigeria.
An Italian man who works in Lagos returned to the country from Milan, where he’s believed to have contracted the virus.
Italy is currently fighting the virus which is sweeping all over the world after first originating from China.
Lagos State’s Ministry of Health announced the infection in a statement but called for citizens to stay calm.
“I wish to assure all Lagosians and Nigerians that we have been strengthening our preparedness since the first confirmation of cases in China. We will use all the resources made available by the State and the Federal Government to respond to this case.” the statement, signed by Lagos State Commissioner of Health Prof Akin Abayomi said.
Africa reported its first cases in the Arab North, but this is the first to hit south of the Sahara.

The coronavirus has now hit all major continents with the exception of Antarctica. There have been over 80,000 confirmed cases worldwide, with close to 3,000 deaths.
At this point, it appears the virus hitting Ghana is just a matter of time.
