Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has died aged 91.
Mubarak, who ruled the large North African nation for 30 years, passed away earlier today in the ICU of a Cairo Hospital where he was recovering from a recent surgery.
He has been battling illness for the past few years since he won his freedom on appeal after being convicted in the killing of protestors during the Arab Spring.
Mubarak was Egypt’s unshakeable leader for 3 straight decades – 1981 to 2011 – but was finally forced to step down in 2011 as a result of incessant protests across the Middle East – the so-called Arab Spring.
After leaving office, he was convicted of the killing of some protestors during the spring and sentenced to life imprisonment.
He was acquited and freed on appeal in 2017.
