Zimbabwean billionaire Steve Masiyiwa has done something pretty extraordinary and unprecedented – he has agreed to pay the wages and transport costs of striking junior doctors in the country.
The junior doctors have been on strike for the past four months, bringing Zimbabwe’s health system to a standstill.
They have not been able to reach an agreement with the government so far to return to work and the only ones suffering were the people of Zimbabwe.
To stop it all, Misiyiwa decided to pay the doctors so they go back to work.
According to the deal, the London based entrepreneur would cover the cost of the doctor’s wages and provide them with transport to work for the next six months.
What happens after the six months are over is not so clear.
According to the BBC, most of the striking doctors earn less than $100 per month.
They went on strike to force the government to tie their wages to the dollar due to Zimbabwe’s crippling inflation.
Masiyiwa would pay the striking doctors $300 per month under the deal they struck to return to work.
