The Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Madam Barbara Oteng Gyasi has expressed that Sarkodie was appointed as the ‘Year of Return’ ambassador because he was selling the country positively to the international community.
This year marks 400 years since the first African slaves were transported from their homeland to Europe and the Americas. To commemorate those inhuman practices that continued for four decades, the president, Nana Akufo Addo and his appointees coined this term, “Year of Return,” to make people aware of what happened and also, tell-all Blacks living elsewhere to come to Africa.
The Ghanaian rapper who is known in real life as Michael Owusu Addo was appointed the ambassador for this mission a few months ago.
Madam Oteng Gyasi made this statement at a press conference that was organized by her Ministry in collaboration with the Ministry of Information in Accra yesterday.
She said that “Sarkodie was appointed a ‘Year of Return’ Ambassador in view of his contribution to the ‘Year of Return’ campaign when he received his award in the United States. He entreated everybody to visit Ghana as part of the ‘Year of Return’,” she noted.
“For that singular effort on such a major international platform, we felt that he marketed the ‘Year of Return’ project and therefore he deserved to be made ambassador for the project. Unfortunately, it (the appointment) came at the tail end of the ‘Year of Return’,” she added.
But she assured that her outfit is going to actively involve him in most of the outstanding activities that are coming off before the year ends.
