Abuja-based judge Justice Binta has ruled that prostitution is not a crime in Nigeria.
The ground-breaking ruling took place on Thursday at the Abuja High Court.
According to Justice Binta Nyako, there is no law in the Nigerian constitution that prohibit prostitution or declares it as a crime.
He has therefore awarded damages to 16 girls who were arrested since 2017 for being s*x workers.
Speaking to BBC, the defendants’ lawyer Babatunde Jacob noted that the court upheld the security agents violated the rights of the girls the moment they raided their homes to arrest them as prostitutes.
