Ghanaian-British Politician Abena Oppong-Asare Wins Erith and Thamesmead Seat For Labour In 2019 UK Elections

The Labour Party might have been annihilated in the just-ended elections but at least one Ghanaian-British MP spent the night smiling.

Abena Oppong-Asare, the Labour Party Candidate for the Erith and Thamesmead seat, managed to hold the seat for the party after beating her main Conservative opponent.

She received 19,882 votes to beat Joe Robertson of the Tory Party, who received 16,124 votes.

The seat has long been a Labour stronghold, but longtime MP Teresa Pearce stepped down before this election, paving the way for Abena to pick up the seat.

Abena Oppong-Asare is a former Bexley councillor who served as a ward representative for four years until 2018.

She becomes the first female Ghanaian-British MP, following in the footsteps of male colleagues Adam Afriyie, Sam Philip Gyimah, and Kwasi Alfred Addo Kwarteng.
