President of Oxford Union Resigns Over Poor Handling of the Violent Removal of a Blind Ghanaian Student From A Debating Chamber

The President of the Oxford Union, Brendan McGrath, has resigned over his poor handling of the case of a Ghanaian University student who was violently removed from a debating chamber.

Ebenezer Azamanti, a blind postgraduate Ghanaian student, was forcibly removed from a debating chamber by a security guard who reportedly ‘dragged him by his ankles’.

After being manhandled by the security officials, the Oxford Union accused him of violent conduct, confiscated his card and cancelled his Union membership.

That outraged Azamanti, who said his treatment had made him feel “unwelcome in the union, Oxford and even the country”. The Oxford University Africa Society (OUAS) said his treatment was “violent, unjust, inhumane and shameful”.

McGrath oversaw the subsequent disciplinary action taken by the Union against a member who had been assaulted, leading to widespread pressure on him to resign.

On Tuesday night, Mcgrath tendered in his resignation.

“For all of my shortcomings, and all of my mistakes, I apologise profusely and unqualifiedly,” he wrote in a post on Facebook.

He also apologized to the OUAS “for the distress and any reputational damage” caused to the Ghanaian student.
