Very soon, witches in this country could end up in jail after the announcement of a soon to be implemented law by the government to criminalize ‘inappropriate’ social media content.
So if you complain about the government and share inappropriate content on social media – you’re going to be one jailed witch.
Communications MInister Ursula Owusu has revealed that government is working on a new bill which if passed through parliament, would criminalize the sharing of inappropriate content on social media.
She mentioned an example of such content as s*xual images, claiming the laws are being put in place to protect children/adolescents.
“The Ministry is working with the Attorney General, and Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, among others to come up with the framework on child online development and welfare within the shortest possible time,” she said at the National week celebration of the Cyber Security Awareness Month 2019.
For that narrow framework, sharing of child pornographic images such a move seems commendable, but you’d think those are already illegal under international law guiding social media platforms.
The problem with Ghana is that such legislation could and most definitely would likely be expanded to criminalize posts the government in power doesn’t like.
Hopefully, that’s not where this law is going to end up but its’ Ghana, don’t hold your breath.
