There’s No Real Reggae/Dancehall Artist in Ghana, Not Even Stonebwoy or Shatta Wale – Kelvynboy

Definition of terms is something that’s thrown about loosely in Ghanaian music. In fact, even the so-called experts have difficulty in distinguishing between afropop or afrobeats or even reggae/dancehall. Every year songs are classified at the VGMAs in genres that people complain are wrong.

Even the artists mix genres in their music all the time, so it’s no wonder there’s little core identity to music in Ghana.

Kelvynboy, who is signed to Stonebwoy’s BHIM label, says as far as he’s concerned there aren’t any real reggae or dancehall artists in Ghana.

According to him, not even his boss Stonebwoy, or loudmouthed Shatta Wale, can be put in any of those categories.

“It can never be dancehall if you are from here. There is no one going strictly by that. The moment you speak Twi, it is not [dancehall] anymore,” he said on Adom Fm’s ‘Work and Happiness’.

According to him, what Stonebwoy does is Afro-dancehall, and considering Beyonce did Afrobeats with Shatta Wale, Ghanaians should learn to embrace our own genres because our artists can never be legitimate reggae/dancehall/hiphop artists.

“Stonebwoy does Afro-dancehall. He is smart so he blended the two. You cannot tow such line because it won’t blow, even if it does it won’t help the act. Beyoncé came to Africa and she did Afrobeat with our dancehall king. I feel like Afrobeat is what we have to accept as ours. We are not recognised outside with those genres otherwise Beyoncé would’ve gone to Jamaica for a dancehall act,” Kelvynboy added.
