The 2019 African Cup of Nations, Ghana’s worst Afcon campaign since 2006, cost the good people of Ghana a ‘mere’ $4.5m.
Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah has revealed to Parliament that whilst government budgeted $6.3m for the tourney, they ended up using ‘only’ $4.5m and said the difference would be returned to the state.
A vague breakdown of the expenses was provided to Parliament by Asiamah, which listed how much was spent on various tasks such as paying winning bonuses, visa fees, accommodation costs etc.
Our players, who only won one match out of four in Egypt, collectively received $965, 405 as winning bonuses, whilst miserable failure Kwesi Appiah and his team received approximately $525,000 as winning bonuses.
Aside these huge bonuses, the players and technical teams also received per diem for every day spent.
The largest expense was accommodation, which cost $1.14m, followed by winning bonuses and by airfare, both of which cost almost a million dollars.

Basically, money thrown down the drain or more accurately, money filling the pockets of others. Ghana would have been better off never participating in this cursed Afcon.
