The Desert Foxes of Algeria are the 2019 Total African Cup of Nations Champions!
Algeria beat Senegal 1-0 in the tightly contested final which just came to an end in Cairo.
A 2nd-minute goal from Baghdad Bounedjah was just enough for Algeria to snatch the win and win only their second ever Cup of Nations title.
As goals that win tournaments go it was a fluke. The game had barely started when Baghdad decided to try a speculative effort from long range.
The shot, however, deflected off a Senegalese defender, went way high into the sky but then somehow found its way back into the net.
The early goal gave Algeria the chance to sit back and defend, and they somehow managed to do so for the rest of the game.
Algeria have remained the best team throughout the tournament and deservedly won the trophy, not losing even once in all 8 games they played.
Africa’s largest country thus replaces Cameroon as Afcon champions.
For Senegal however, it’s yet another final heartbreak after similarly losing the cup to Cameroon in their last appearance in 2002.
The African Cup returns in 2021 with Ghana once again on a futile effort to win the ever elusive trophy.
Congrats to Algeria on their win!
