The Black Stars of Ghana return to action tonight in the African Cup of Nations, needing a win against perennial nemesis Cameroon to get their campaign back on track.
Ghana, having drawn 2-2 against Benin in the first group game, can scarcely afford a slip up in tonight’s second group game.
But Cameroon, who dumped Ghana out of both the 2008 and 2017 Afcon semi-finals, would provide formidable opposition for Kwesi Appiah’s reeling team.
Aside the disappointing final score in the first game against Benin, Ghana also lost two key players with injury to captain Dede Ayew and the red card of John Boye.
Boye would miss the clash through suspension but Ayew missed two days of training with the team before returning Friday and is a minor doubt for the game.
Cameroon has developed into a bit of a bogey team for the Stars and Appiah and his boys would need a far better performance than what they showed against Benin to get any sort of result out of this game.
Vice skipper Kwadwo Asamoah, who inexplicably missed the first game, could make a return to the team especially with Ayew’s injury. His presence could be the creative spark needed to get the Black Stars back on track.
A loss would by no means be a disastrous result, considering the 24 team format means some 3rd place teams would qualify to the second round – but it would only confirm what many Ghanaians have said about the cluelessness of James Kwesi Appiah as a head coach for this team.
Victory, and the team would be back on track for a run deep into the competition.
