Success in music is not always about talent.
There are many incredibly talented artists who never get the hits their careers deserve whilst there are many mediocre talents who become so big it boggles your mind. I’ll refer you to the career paths of Strongman and Patapaa.
So this discussion has little to do with talent and everything to do with impact.
A few weeks ago, Medikal created a commotion in the Ghanaian social media sphere when he claimed in a tweet that he is the saviour of the Ghanaians rap industry.
Medikal, who had just won ‘Rapper of the Year’ at the VGMA Awards and was feeling pretty good with himself, became a little too arrogant for his own good by claiming he had saved Ghanaian rap music from dying when he first appeared on the scene four years ago.
Everyone laughed at Medikal for that claim, and rightly so. He couldn’t save himself from 7 nominations and ZERO awards back in 2017, so it’s an insult to even claim he saved the entire rap game TWO full years prior to that.
But whilst that claim was laughable then, it’s not so laughable now. What Medikal has accomplished since then actually makes a strong claim for him as the saviour of Gh rap.
That comment has generated a massive storm which culminated with his current beef with Strongman which took over the entire social media landscape over the weekend.
Ever since Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy put their beef to bed, both of them have been struggling to gain any traction in the media. Practically everyone has forgotten about them and a vacuum has been opened for anyone brave enough to take it.
Medikal has taken over that vacuum by sparking another beef which has social media interested in the rap game once again. The last time the rap game took over everything for such an extended period was during the great M.Dot-Sark beef of 2016 and no matter how briefly, Medikal and Strongman has been able to replicate that a bit.
Strongman’s ‘Don’t Try’ diss rose to number 1 on trending on YouTube over the weekend and both Facebook and Twitter had the two rappers trending for majority of the weekend.
Whilst the beef has now died down a bit, showing the limitations of both Medikal and Strongman as top tier talents able to get Ghanaians interested in them, at least for two full days they took over everything and made Ghanaians excited about rap once again; and that is mostly down to the efforts of Medikal.
So although he was slaughtered in this beef, had his girl’s sordid past dredged up once again and would probably be trolled by Ghanaians for another the forseeable future, Medikal at least has gotten rap to take over the social media space ahead of every other trending topic.
For the first time in a long time, Ghanaians are excited about a beef not involving Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale, Sarkodie or M.anifest.
For that, we can conclude Medikal elevated the rap game a little and at least temporarily, became the saviour he wished to become. It’s just a pity his rap skills remain mediocre and his lyrical prowess questionable, but as already established one does not necessarily have to be a genius to be successful in this game.

It’s all about the ability to grab and sustain attention baby, and Medikal has that skill down pat.
