Players of the senior national team, the Black Stars, have all received their $80,000 Afcon appearance fees before even kicking a ball at the tournament.
According to Asempa Fm, the initial 29-man squad named by Kwesi Appiah for camping were all given the agreed on exorbitant appearance fee for the tournament.
That 29-man squad has since been whittled down to 23, meaning the 6 players who have been sent home also received the sum of money.
The Black Stars would play at most 7 games at the Afcon, that’s if they go all the way to the finals, and in return they each take home a whopping $80,000.
The players reportedly received their monies at a dinner held at Kempinski hotel before they left for their pre-tournament training camp in Dubai.

After the Brazil fiasco, the players are being paid ahead of the tournament, but the size of the appearance fee has not gone down well with Ghanaians.
If the reports holds, government has shelved out close to $3m in appearance fees before a ball is even kicked at the tournament.
Ghana’s entire budget for the tournament is estimated to be $15m, yet winning the entire competition would only earn us $4.5m.
Meanwhile, general captain Asamoah Gyan recently showed a video of the team training to convince Ghanaians why they deserve $80,000 each for a month’s work.

Suffice to say, nobody was convinced.
The 2019 Afcon commences on June 21st, and apparently the performance of our team does not even matter in relation to the kind of money they can make out of the tournament.
