Theresa May to Step Down as British Prime Minister in June

The United Kingdom are set to crown their 3rd Prime Minister in three years as Theresa May has announced she’s stepping down on the back of a failed Brexit deal.

May, who took over from David Cameron in 2016 with a mandate to deliver on the Brexit deal the country had voted for, ultimately failed to reach that deal and thus lost support of her party, who pushed for her to be taken out of office.

She announced she would be stepping down on June 7th for the party to elect a new leader to take over her office.

So far, four Conservative MPs, Jeremy Hunt, Boris Johnson, Esther McVey and Rory Stewart, have announced plans to contest for leadership of the party. Former London mayor Johnson is seen as the prohibitive favourite for the job.

“A new leader will have the opportunity to do things differently and have the momentum of a new administration,” Johnson said.

The Consertative Party has set a time table of July for a new Premier to be elected by MPs.
