Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan shocked the nation Monday evening when he announced his retirement from international football.
Gyan had been expected to lead the Black Stars to the upcoming Cup of Nations in Egypt, having been named in the provisional 30 man squad for the tournament by coach Kwesi Appiah.
However, Gyan announced in the impromptu statement Monday that he had decided to retire because he could not be in the team anymore and not be the captain.
According to reports, Kwesi Appiah had informed Gyan that he wanted him in the team but that he would be stripped of his captaincy.
An unhappy Gyan thus decided to retire rather than play in the Stars.
Responding to the news on Twitter, Nana Aba said Gyan might be one of the best ever forwards produced by this country but the press statement announcing his retirement came off as petulant, like a child throwing a tantrum because they did not get what they want.

Asamoah is the best forward this country has had. His impact on the Blackstars can never be overlooked. He was committed and driven by passsion. We don’t thank him enough.
But that press release to announce his retirement is atrocious and makes him look petulant.
