Mimi Andani-Michaels, director of the Golden Movie Awards, has made it clear that the choice of winning movies would always remain in the hands of an experienced jury and not turned into the hands of the public.
According to Mimi, award shows decided by public voting become popularity contests and sometimes the best movies or actors might not win because they don’t have any followers.
Speaking with Joy News’ reporter MzGee, Mimi made it clear the jury of experienced filmmakers would make the choices for the Golden Movie Awards so it retains its technical quality.
“We can never [allow public voting],” she said.
“It’s solely going to be a performance-based Awards till ‘thy kingdom come’ because, we believe that fans are always biased and so the right film might not win.
“Somebody will vote for Nadia Buari because they love Nadia Buari not because Nadia Buari’s film was good or Nadia was good in the film but just because I love Nadia or just because I love Nikki Samonas or Lilian Esoro and that’s it. I don’t care about the film that will not help us, it needs to be properly judged by professionals,” she added.
Mimi also revealed this year’s award would be shifted back a bit so it does not conflict with next month’s African Cup of Nations.
