Ahead of the VGMA Awards night Saturday, Volta Regime Music Group (VRMG) rapper Edem has staked his claim to why he deserves to be in the ‘Artist of the Decade’ category and other artists do not.
The special anniversary artist of the decade award has become the de facto main award on the night as all the attention has been on it this time, relegating the usual ‘big dog’ artist of the year award to the background.
So far the conversation has been between the three ‘S’ of the industry – Samini, Shatta Wale and Sarkodie – but Edem believes he deserves to be in that conversation and even some other artists should be left out.
Edem, speaking to Joy News, said the category is named ‘Artist of the Decade’ and whilst he has been consistent for a decade, some artists who cannot even boast of being on top of the industry for a decade are in the running whilst he is not.
“I think I deserve to be on that category because a decade is ten years and we have people there who haven’t done ten years,” he said.
“So Charterhouse I think I deserve to be in that category for what I have done for the region and bring the language to the forefront from 2009 to 19…”
Per Edem’s definition, one big name who has not ‘done ten years’, as he put it, would be Shatta Wale, who only returned to the industry in 2013 after taking a decade off.
Strictly by numbers, he hasn’t even done ten years for him to be nominated for the ‘Artist of the Decade’ category ahead of Edem.
