Game of Thrones’ ‘Battle of Winterfell’ Episode Simultaneously Becomes Series’ Most Watched And Second Lowest Rated Episode of All Time

Game of Thrones’ epic Season 8 battle episode, titled ‘The Long Night’ and unofficially known as ‘The Battle of Winterfell’, has set two new records for the show, one of which is quite unwanted.

The third episode of the 8th season, which featured the epic battle of Winterfell as the Night King and his army besieged the living at Winterfell, has become the most viewed episode in the show’s history.

According to Forbes, numbers from HBO show that 17.8 m people watched the episode, a new record, up from the record set by the eighth season premiere of 17.4m people.

The second record set by the episode is that it is Game of Thrones’ second lowest rated episode of all time on the review aggregation site Rotten Tomatoes.

The show has scored a 75% rating on the site based on scores from 93 reviews. That is the lowest episode rating since Season 5 episode 6, ‘Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken’, and is the show’s second lowest rated episode of all time.

The complaints against the episode are generally twofold, that it was too dark to see and that its resolution was anticlimactic, which incidentally tallies with my own complaints in my episode review.

With only three more episodes to go, Game of Thrones would definitely keep breaking viewership records but whether it keeps slumping in ratings would depend on how the showrunners decide to end this epic story.
