If D-Black is known for one thing in the Ghanaian music industry, it’s for being an astute businessman. His rap skills have been described as mediocre for so long by so many people it’s pointless to even try to argue against that at this point.
Of course, success is life, even as a musician, is not simply measured in how good you are as a performer/entertainer. Business planning is a big part of being successful, as seen in the recent feud between Black and Tinny. Tinny is miles ahead of D-Black when it comes to rap and was the king of Ghanaian music a while back, but has somehow managed to piss all that away to slither into irrelevance whilst D-Black is still somewhat relevant.
But D-Black, despite being applauded for his business acumen, has admitted that his record label Black Avenue Muzik is not really a profit-making enterprise.
Speaking on ‘The Gist’ with JoyNews’ MzGee, D-Black said he started the label to help fellow musicians to get an opportunity to be successful but he’s not really making money out of it.
“Running a label is not really a money making venture,” he said. “It is about helping those who couldn’t help themselves. I don’t think I earn more than 30 or 35% of anybody’s contract,”
Running a label is not really a money making venture? Bullet seems to be doing fine with his label, as is Richie Mensah. The difference probably lies in the kinds of talent they identify. One successful artist like Ebony or Kuami Eugene can set his boss up for life.
If D-Black cannot run a successful business, then what claim to fame does he have any more?
Anyway, the rapper, born Desmond Blackmore, added that his label is more of a family rather than a business and anyone who leaves does so at their own peril.
“…We will go to church and we will pray, we will travel together when it doesn’t have anything to do with music, we will travel together, we will talk, I will bring people to come talk with you. You have access to so many things, you can come and spend the weekend at my house, we can do things that aren’t related to music just so you could feel comfortable as an artiste, not a lot people do that.
“If you leave because you don’t like the speed at which you are moving and there can be no other reason because really and truly my team works very hard and if you don’t appreciate the team and myself then it is your loss.” he added.
