Unveiling Masaany — The Dancehall Messiah of Ghana

The Ghanaian music industry is experiencing a boom these days, with the genre of dancehall playing a particularly leading role. We have two artists always in the news plus a legend like Samini and many others raising high the flag of the genre.

Yet one big name in the industry who deserves just as much recognition but often does not due to his unassuming nature is the singer born Gberbie Abdul-Aziz Nii Lartey, professionally known as Masaany.

Masaany is a grand name in the dancehall world who is known to the hardcore followers of the genre but not so much to the casual music fan who is only interested in those with mainstream hits or social media cred. There is a proud tradition in music of incredible artists who build cult followings but are not too mainstream and Massany straddles that tradition with pride.

However, a talent of his calibre deserves the same adulation handed out to lesser talents with more visibility in the media. There’s a case to be made that a lot of attention these days is showered on those with a penchant for controversy, drowning out the more talented stars who might not be too interested in building up fame that way.

Masaany is more of the latter, not very flashy but packing a lot of talent which deserves to be heard. Luckily for him, through a combination of hard work and pure talent, he’s built a cult following who know exactly what he has to offer. And they never hesitate to share with the non-believers what they stand to gain by taking a chance on Masaany.

The dancehall messiah was born Gberbie Abdul-Aziz Nii Lartey to Helena Abruquah Gberbie and Gberbie Awuley Ibrahim in Tema Newton. A music aficionado since childhood, there was never a doubt in anyone’s mind that he was headed for eventual stardom.

Eventually settling on the stage name Masaany, he grabbed attention with his high tempo singles. He formed the Militant Family to sell his music and talent to Ghana and the world. He built a cult following of dancehall traditionalists and cultivated a brand of being a dancehall Messiah/ghetto youth preacher.

A few years ago, during the heat of the Shatta Wale and Samini beef, Masaany lived up to his tag as a Messiah as he stepped into the battle and neutralized the firing combatants. Utilizing his unique appeal to both the ghetto base of Wale and Samini’s more cosmopolitan following, Masaany was the perfect emissary and called for an end to the battle, helping restore peace to Ghanaian dancehall and fulfilling his destiny as the Messiah.

His single dubbed ‘Mano p3 Asem’ released during that beef has since become the stuff of legend.

Masaany has since gone on to hit more milestones, including an impressive nomination at the upcoming 2019 edition of the GODiT Ghana Music Awards in the Reggae Song of the Year Category. As at the time of filing this, Masaany had a lead in the public voting, leading Iwan and other stars.

He has also embarked on a campaign to help raise awareness about the menace of fire outbreaks in the country, which takes many lives and leads to the destruction of millions of cedis worth of property every year. Masaany has released a single dubbed ‘You and Fire’ to spread the message of how to prevent such tragic disasters.

Masaany is currently promoting his latest single ‘Which One’, plus its accompanying music video. ‘Which One’ has generated impressive airplay since its release and contains to gain Masaany more mainstream appeal.

The Militant Family CEO signed a record deal with Nacnad Entertainment this year to help further his ascent into the limelight. He is currently managed by Enabort Entertainment.

Masaany has built an impressive resumé through the years, with impressive collaborations with Dr Cryme and Dutch star Drumma Kid. He has performed on the same stage as Stonebwoy, who has been nothing but a brother to him. The two are working on a hot new collaboration which would take Ghana music by storm when released.

Masaany works to bring people together, which has served him well as he is considered by many as a messenger for the ghetto youth and brings their message out. In that vein, he is truly a messiah and more, and there can be no doubt that he’s headed straight to a coveted spot in the pantheon of Ghanaian dancehall greats.
