The Black Stars of Ghana finally found their mojo to beat Kenya 1-0 in the final qualifying game for the 2019 African Cup of Nations, aiding them to finish top of the group ahead of the Harambee Stars.
Caleb Ekuban’s last quarter goal proved to be decisive in settling the battle between the two sides for top spot in the group.
Both teams had already qualified prior to kick-off, but bragging rights were at stake as Kenya saw an opportunity to topple a traditional African heavyweight at their low point.
Kenya had garnered 7 points in three games, leaving them 1 ahead of the Stars, who lost the return leg last year.
However, an out of sorts Stars team still managed to get the better of their opponents. After a largely boring 3 quarters of the game had passed, Ekuban got off the bench to put the tie to bed with a rasping shot past the Kenyan goalie.
The win gave the Stars exactly what they needed, putting them top ahead of the Kenyans.
Ghana qualifies for Egypt 2019 with 9 points, finishing two ahead of the brash Harambee Stars.
