Every single year, for the past 20 years, when Charterhouse releases the nominees for their Annual Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, the list is met with, excitement, fury, joy and disappointment from industry players and music lovers as a whole.
This year’s list, which was released via social media and selected television and radio stations in Ghana, has also been met with the same serious sentiments and expressions, leading us to the conclusion that the awards thrive on controversies.
One particular category that has actually annoyed a lot of people is the VGMA Best Rapper Of The Year category. Sarkodie, Obibini, Manifest, Teephlow and Medikal were the artistes who were nominated for that particular category.
Throughout the raging debate on social media, it looks like many people are in agreement that although Sarkodie’s ‘Cant Let You Go’ song that features King Promise was a fairly good one, the rap on it does not merit a VGMA Best Rapper Of The Year category nomination. A lot also felt although Teephlow’s ‘Preach’ song was good it lacks that popularity to merit a nomination per the definition of that category. Many people are of the opinion that Strongman and Kwesi Arthur should have replaced them with their ‘Anthem’ and ‘My Vibe’ songs respectively.
