‘I’m Not Male or Female, I’m Somewhere in Between’ — Musician Sam Smith Comes out as ‘non-binary’

British singer Sam Smith has shocked quite a hefty number of people by declaring that he doesn’t see himself as either male or female and thus when it comes to gender, he sees himself as non-binary.

Smith made the declaration during an interview with actress Jameela Jamal in a chat covering among other topics, fame, body image and confidence.

The ‘Stay with Me’ singer, speaking about the current gender norms of male and female, said he sees himself as a male sometimes and a female at other times, adding he has often thought of undergoing a s*x change as a result.

“I’ve always had a little bit of a war going within my body and my mind. I do think like a woman sometimes, in my head. Sometimes I’ve questioned ‘Do I want a s*x change?” he said during the interview.

“It’s something I still think about, like, ‘Do I want to?'”

Smith said as a consequence of this, he does not consider himself strictly male or female.

“I’m not male or female, I think I flow somewhere in between. It’s all on the spectrum,”

Smith’s position is known as being non-binary, and he’s just one of tons of people worldwide who identify as and live their lives as non-binary.

According to the BBC, “many non-binary people don’t identify as either male or female and use the pronouns they or them instead of he or she.”
