The long playing career of former Black Stars midfielder Michael Essien is just not over yet, as he’s now signed a one year deal with an Azerbaijani club.
Essien, as part of the deal, would also work as a coach with the club’s u-19 side, as he works on his transition from player to manager once he eventually retires from playing.
The former Ghanaian international travelled to Azerbaijan to complete the one year deal with Premiership side Sabail FK, a deal which runs till May 2020.
He would play for Sabail in domestic competition whilst also serving as part of the club’s U-19 team coaching staff.
A world class player in his day, Essien has declined as he’s grown older. After a stellar career playing for Chelsea, Lyon, Real Madrid and A.C Milan, he last played for Persip Bandung in Indonesia.
He’s currently studying for a UEFA B licence in coaching.
