FAFFA — A Music Star with Style from Africa

There was a time in history when Ghanaian gospel was one of the strongest genres in the entire industry. There was a healthy contingent of top-class stars who churned out hit after hit with no pause.

It was a true golden age for Gospel, and the genre stood its ground against secular music in selling Ghana not just across the continent but all over the world.

Unfortunately, as the years went by the genre became heavily diluted. Gospel music has lost both its divine inspiration and its place among the pantheon of top Ghanaian music genres. The industry has also become one big, backstabbing fest with artists accusing each other of disgraceful acts which are not befitting of any gospel artist.

In such an environment, most Ghanaians are yearning for a new star to provide a callback to those great days of gospel music in Ghana, when the Esther Smith’s, Stella Dugan’s and groups such as Daughter of Glorious Jesus and Tagoe Sisters ruled the roost and made Gospel a real powerhouse to reckon with.

And when we come across such a star, it’s hard to contain the excitement at the potential of harking back to the dizzying heights of those days.

An established name in the gospel genre who perhaps does not get the recognition she deserves but who is a clear manifestation of a callback to the golden age is the singer known as FAFFA.

Rising through challenges to get to the top of a field is no mean feat, but to do so in the face of numerous, seemingly insurmountable odds is something that surely must be celebrated.

And that is the story of Faith Fafa Gobah, professionally known as FAFFA, the Ghanaian gospel musician you ought to know about but probably do not.

FAFFA is a gospel singer who has been a revelation to the industry ever since the moment she set her foot in it. Her singing style is a throwback to the golden age of the genre and her music is inspired in a way which makes the heart yearn for more.

Like most gospel singers, FAFFA started singing way back when as a kid, performing in churches and church programs and displaying a talent for singing which grabbed attention wherever she performed.

Despite focusing seriously on her education and completing two tertiary institutions, there was never any question as to the profession Faffa was going to end up in. She started music at an early age and she was so good at it that it was always going to be her calling.

Everywhere she performed, she received plaudits for being one for the future and FAFFA has delivered on that. With a silky voice, powerful anointing and a penchant for writing songs which hearken back to the golden age of Ghanaian gospel, FAFFA garnered a cult fanbase and rocketed through the ranks of the Ghanaian gospel scene.

She released her first album in 2011, the aptly named ‘Father’s House’, which had a powerful impact and introduced her to the world. She followed that up with ‘Nobody But You’ in 2013, another powerful album which remains massively underrated to this day, especially in comparison to most of the items out there masquerading as gospel.

‘You Are’, off of ‘Nobody But You’, received a nomination at the 2013 Christian Community Music Awards for ‘Most Wanted Contemporary Song’. FAFFA lost to Cwesi Oteng, which is nothing to be ashamed of, considering he’s turned out to be one of the faces of the genre currently.

That turned out to be nothing more than a temporary disappointment, as it served as a platform for future award wins for FAFFA. Her song ‘Make me Wanna’ was the first to land her an award win, winning the ‘Best Gospel Hiphop’ Song of the Year at the 2017 National Gospel Music Awards (NGMA). That was followed by two award wins for ‘Purpose Song’ at the 2018 edition of the NMGAs, winning the ‘Best Gospel Video of the Year’ and ‘Corporate Song of the Year’.

FAFFA is currently working on her third album, which would firmly establish her as a bonafide star in the industry without question. One of the singles off the album, ‘Kpegbadza’, is already making waves and grabbing attention, with an enthralling attached music video.

Despite her fight to establish her career in the limelight, FAFFA does not forget to give back to society. A rough patch in her life led her to contemplate suicide several times, causing her to conceptualize a program known as the ‘Say yes to life tour’. The tour consists of FAFFA and her team visiting numerous schools to give motivational speeches to students and provide them with inspirational performances, culminating in an unforgettable experience. The tour has currently hit schools such as Adisadel College, Accra Academy, Central University and Sogakope Secondary School.

The singer was appointed as a UN Youth Goodwill Ambassador for Ghana to help promote the Strategic Development Goal 16, which is targeted at Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions.

A near complete package, FAFFA is a veritable combination of talent, superb stagecraft, the right vocal skills and an almost classical style, making her one to watch, the next name to revolutionize a patently struggling genre. She is an urban contemporary gospel nurse with ecstasy injections — better still, a charismatic doctor with a secret gospel cure.

With Ghanaians harbouring a thirst for a return to the era of gospel’s dominance, she provides the opportunity to relive the past whilst living in the present, simultaneously getting a glimpse at the future of the genre.

Born Faith Fafa Gobah, FAFFA is currently single with no kids to her name. She holds a HND in Electrical/Electronics Engineering from the Ho Technical University, as well as a degree in Human Resource Management from the Central University College.

A lover of music through and through, she has heroes such as Yolanda Adams, Cece Winans, Lauryn Hill and the maestro, Kojo Antwi himself.
