Veteran Ghanaian broadcaster Kafui Dey has some truth to spit out about the usefulness of a graduate degree in the current Ghanaian job market.
Dey, in a speech delivered at the 5th Edition of the What I Wish I Knew (WIWIK) Conference, told attendees that getting a first class degree in school has zero correlation with how well you do once you hit the job market in search of employment.
That’s one piece of truth that too few graduates actually know about. It’s more a consequence of the fact that the Ghanaian education system is more theoretical than practical thus in the job industry, experience and critical thinking ability counts for much more than simply having a first class degree.
And Kafui made that clear in his speech, describing the fight for first class in school as overrated.
“Grades are overrated, [and] getting a first class is really overrated,” Kafui said.
“You come to the real world and employers want to know what you can do or what you have done in the past. Networking is something I would have done a bit more, linking up with people and developing relationships.” he added.
He clarified that students have to take their studies seriously but should not be obsessed with thinking simply getting a first class would guarantee employment.
