Leila Djansi
The explosion of Ghana’s #MeToo movement was certain to elicit a response from filmaker Leila Djansi, who has become one of the faces of the feminist movement in Ghana.
Djansi has commented on the recent rape stories and has also added her own experiences of s*xual assault.
According to her, she has suffered attempted rape at least four times in her life, and that was even before turning 18.
Djansi wrote on social media in response to the alleged rape stories of Kuukuwa Andam and others, wondering if Ghanaian men are inherently rapists or simply don’t understand s*x and love.
“…Escaped rape 4 times before I turned 18 in Ghana. Are Ghanaian men are rapists or do they not understand s*x, love and relationships?” she wrote.
“In a society where a woman is deemed property, it’s not surprising they believe they can take anyone they want.
“Widowhood rites, dipo rites, witches camps, female genital mutilation, trokosi….a violation of the life and body of women in the name of religion or culture has plagued the society for generations!
!Bottom line, African men have no respect for women! But a woman must be married or she’s not complete, so we have a bunch of ignorant women who give agency to the male exploitation agenda”. she added.
