Controversial Ghanaian Politician and Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong is crying over abnormal duty charges at the port on goods imported into the nation.
According to him, his goods worth $4m are locked at the port and there is no way he is getting money to pay due to the exorbitant duties which the port officials are demanding from him.
The loudmouthed Member of Parliament disclosed this during an interview on the Tuesday 18th December 2018’s segment of Adom TV’s Badwam morning show.
“I have imported goods worth 4 million dollars, the duties on the goods is 800 million dollars. How do you create an enabling environment for businesses with this? I have sent copies of the import duties to the Vice President. He was also shocked. In fact, I will not be able to clear the goods, where will I get the money from?” he enquired.
“As a country, we have to think about the Dubai and Singapore way where we reduce import duties to give room for businessmen to import more and sell more to enable the government rake in more taxes. It is not prudent to pile pressure on the few importers with higher taxes,” he said.
He, therefore, used the opportunity to send a strong warning to the ruling government, NPP to take the necessary steps should they ever want to remain in power.
