GRA Announces Plans To Tax Sale Of ‘Obinim Sticker’, Holy Water And Other Revenue Generating Activities Of Churches

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has continued their recent crackdown on tax evasion with the announcement of a new plan to tax churches for revenue they make outside of offertory and tithes.

According to the Commissioner-General of the Authority, Emmanuel Kofi Nti, they have plans to implement and collect taxes on sales of other artefacts often carried out by churches.

Over the years churches have devised numerous clever ways to milk their congregation of cash by selling magic items allegedly possessing extraordinary powers of healing, among others.

These items include the famed ‘Obinim sticker’ (and its variants), holy water, anointing oil and many other accoutrements which would supposedly change your life if you just take out your hard earned money and purchase them.

According to Nti, men of God are accountable to the state just as everyone else and the only thing immune from taxes would be offering and tithes.

“The man of God; is he not an individual? And is he not accountable to the state for his tax obligations? There is an opportunity for us to look at it,” he said.

He said stuff like the ‘Obinim sticker’ would be taxed because “it is income to him [Obinim].”

The GRA has in recent months initiated more aggressive measures to get tax defaulters to honour their obligations to the state. Their aggressive measures have grabbed headlines, with the most recent being a raid on the Kempinski Hotel.
