Close to two years ago, during the highly contentious 2016 electioneering campaign, almost every issue in the country became politicized and served as a campaign issue for either of the two main parties.
One of the NPP’s biggest promises at the time concerned the DKM Microfinance disaster. After the company collapsed and led to depositors losing most of their investments, the then-candidate Akufo-Addo promised that they would settle those affected if they won the election.
Since the election and in the two years since, the NPP have often made clear that they are making good on that promise. Recently. Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta claimed that about 80% of depositors who had their money with the now defunct company have been settled.
However, a group of former customers of the company claim the figure is completely wrong and most of them have not received their monies as promised.

According to Nana Nyarko, Chairman of a group called Brong Ahafo DKM Victims Investment Association, a huge number of their members, about 60, have committed suicide due to losing huge sums of money invested with the company.
“Many have lost their lives while others have lost their jobs and serving prison terms due to monies they borrowed for their businesses,” he said.
Nyarko added that they have a petition addressed to the President which they need action to be taken on.
“We are almost done with our petition to the president. The 80% payment the finance minister said has been made is not factual.” Nyarko added.
