The Black Queens of Ghana opened their African Women’s Nations Cup campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory over the female national team of Algeria.
Ghana, hosting the tournament and hoping to win their first AWC title, managed to kick off on the right foot in their opening game.
The fired up Queens didn’t take long to find their groove, taking the lead in the 12th minute of the game.
Gladys Amfobea struck a sweet effort into the Algerian net to give Ghana the early lead and enable the Black Queens to control the game from then on out.
Despite their control, the Queens remained unable to break down the Algerian defence once again, escaping with a slender 1-0 victory.
The win puts Ghana top of their group ahead of this evening’s game between Cameroon and Mali.
