There are many rituals we go through with in this country which has little to no discernible effect on the lives of Ghanaians but which everyone loves to have anyway.
Almost 30 years after multiparty democracy returned to Ghana in 1992, very little has changed to make the lives of Ghanaians more tolerable and to keep the standard of living high enough for the majority.
Yet every year we keep up the rituals, reading of state of the nation addresses or the budget statement and the likes, and every year things get worse or stay roughly the same.
This morning in Parliament, the finance minister Ken Ofori Atta delivered government’s budget statement for the upcoming fiscal year.
The budget was under the theme, “A Stronger Economy for Jobs and Prosperity”
It contained, as usual, a lot of promises which are mostly going to remain unfulfilled in 12 months time when we reassemble for the ritual.
