Ghana as a country does not practice a monarchical form of government or monarchy, our type of governance is purely democratic where every four years elections are held to elect leaders who will manage the affairs of this country.
The rule of law is one of the main pillars associated with democratic governance making everybody equal before the law and giving the courts of the land the responsibility to settle disputes among people in the country in an equal manner. Rule of law simply means everyone is equal before the law no matter your age, sex, Religion or status in the country.
Long before Ghana gained independence in 1957 and democratic governance coming into force in 1992 Ghana was a strictly monarchical country where Kings and Queens were the overlords of the country who ruled and settled disputes among their subjects.
Even though we are now in a democracy but one of the ethnic group in Ghana who has still been able to hold onto their monarchical principles under the confines of Ghanaian laws is the people of Ashanti Region. Our King His Royal Highness Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is the most powerful traditional ruler in Ghana and one of the most powerful in the world. His palace is like a court where disputes of high magnitude are settled. Sometimes he settles issues or disputes that leaders of this country and our courts are not even able to settle; an example being the recent dispute and brutality on KNUST Campus.
So we are not really surprised that a video of the King has surfaced on social media where he is seen saying that no court in Ghana will overturn or overrule a decision he makes in Ghana at his Manhyia Palace. Yes, he is that powerful and commands a lot of respect across the political divide.
