Ghanaian celebrities are quite fond of travelling outside the country to give birth, especially to the U.S where giving birth entitles the child to citizenship status.
U.S President Donald J. Trump however might just put an end to that practice with his latest policy position.
With the midterm elections only one week away and with his party facing imminent loss of the House, Trump has ramped up his anti immigration rhetoric.
The latest announcement from him is a plan to stop the citizenship birthright program, which grants citizenship to anyone once they are born within the United States.
Trump said he is going to sign an Executive Order taking away that right from babies of non U.S citizens and unathourized immigrants.
“We’re the only country in the world where a person comes in and has a baby, and the baby is essentially a citizen of the United States … with all of those benefits,” Trump said.
“It’s ridiculous. It’s ridiculous. And it has to end.”
Trump plans to use an executive order to enact the policy, but several experts disagree that he can do it unilaterally and if he does sign the order, it’s likely to end up facing unending legal challenges.
