Kweku Adoboli is a Ghanaian born UK investment banker who has become world famous after his illegal trading led to losses of approximately $2.3bn.
Adoboli, formerly of UBS, was tried for fraud, found guilty and then sentenced to 7 years in prison in 2012.
Adoboli was released after serving half his sentence, but was then put up for deportation back to the motherland. He is fighting the deportation on the grounds that he has no roots in Ghana and that he considers himself British, having lived there since he was 12 years old.
He made headlines back in Ghana after reports emerged that he had said being deported to Ghana would be worse than staying in prison in the UK. He later came out to deny making that specific statement, instead saying that being ‘banished’ from the UK was worse than being in prison.
He was granted a stay from his deportation on appeal, but has now lost that appeal and is set to be deported, a decision he says has left him ‘heartbroken’.

“Today’s hearing felt like a second [criminal] trial. I have worked really hard for the last seven years, firstly to right my wrongs and also to help people learn why these things happen. None of this has been done to absolve myself of what I did. This judgment casts aspersions about my character which I completely disagree with. This is incredibly distressing. I have lived here for 26 years. My identity is British.” he said.
Adoboli and his legal team also signalled they have more cards to play to attempt to stay his deportation.
In its reaction to the ruling, the Home Office said in a statement that “We are pleased that the court ruled in our favour and has upheld our decision in this case.”
